How are you supposed to brush a toddler's teeth? Getting her to sit still enough to get the toothbrush in the mouth is one challenge. Actually getting to the teeth and getting any kind of back-and-forth action going is a miracle. Have you ever tried brushing a toddler's teeth who, if you manage to get the toothbrush in the mouth in the first place, spends the whole time sucking and licking the water and paste off the toothbrush? Next time you brush your teeth, try to get to the teeth while you're sucking on the bristles. Needless to say, despite my best efforts, I'm afraid we'd better start making deposits in a dental savings account. Suggestions? Donations?

Thanks for commenting on my blog! Now it's my turn. The one way we've gotten Brooklyn to love brushing her teeth is, of course, by music. "This is the way we brush our teeth . . ." then on the second verse we sing it with our mouth open wide "Ha ha ha ha, ha ha, ha ha . . ." then on the third verse we do cheezy smile face. We love teeth brushing time! You also might want to brush your teeth like that in front of her first using the same fun loving method. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Henry does the same exact thing. It's pretty frustrating! From what I've heard, the important thing now is just establishing the habit. For one thing, they're baby teeth that are going to fall out anyway! My sister's dentist even told her that she should be using fluoride toothpaste on her 2-year-old -- just to brush his teeth with water. I'm still using toothpaste on Henry b/c he loves it, but that was comforting to me that the dentist at least said brushing with water would be enough. We'll just keep trying, I guess!
correction: meant to say "My sister's dentist said she SHOULDN'T be using fluoride toothpaste on her 2-year-old."
